Course Description and Content
This is an intermediate level course in vocabulary and idioms. Students will study flashcards for 60 of the most commonly used academic words and make flashcards for 10 new words they discover in their own weekly studies. We will also cover vocabulary words from the second half of the text Making Connections 2. Students are expected to study new vocabulary words and try to use them in speaking and writing.
Kennesaw State University IEP Inclement Weather Policy
In case of inclement (bad) weather, the IEP may delay the start of classes or cancel classes for the day. If KSU is closed, then the IEP is closed as well. Announcements about closures will also be made on email, the IEP Facebook page, and with a message on the IEP office phone. Students should check these every morning that they have concerns about the weather.
Students who have questions can contact the IEP office staff using the KSU IEP Facebook page or email. Full-time staff and teachers will monitor these and respond as soon as possible.
If classes are cancelled, then teachers will email students assignments and homework. These assignments are required and will help the classes stay on schedule.
Weekly Requirements
Every Wednesday : Quiz on the Weekly Words & Flashcards Due
Students will use the website/app Quizlet to study the 20 vocab words of the week and to add their new sets of 10 new vocabulary words each week to the class. If students do not want to use Quizlet, then they must make their own flashcards of the 20 words of the week and 10 flashcards for their own words each week.

My name is Jeannie Parker Beard and I am an instructor of English at Kennesaw State University. I taught English Composition at Kennesaw State for several years before I was recruited to teach in the IEP. I am a native of Kennesaw, Georgia, and my parents still live in the home where I grew up right down the road from the university. I have two degrees from Kennesaw State, the first is a Bachelor’s of Arts in English, and the second is a Master’s of Arts in Professional Writing (MAPW). While working on my master’s, I had an internship tutoring ESL students at Kennesaw State’s ESL Study and Tutorial Center, located on the fourth floor of the Sturgis Library. In 2012, I completed my PhD in English at Georgia State University. My areas of specialization are Rhetoric and Composition and new media studies. My research interests are in the use of technology in the English classroom.
I also enjoy making videos for educational as well as personal purposes. I believe that we can use multimedia technologies and social media to inspire more active and engaged global citizens and a create better future for us all. My hobbies are reading, writing, watching documentaries, cooking, hiking and camping. I love to be outdoors. I have been married to my college sweetheart for almost ten years and we have a four-year-old son and a two dogs, one has brown and black stripes and the other is a tan chihuahua. I love organic food, meeting new people, and spending time with my friends and family. I look forward to getting to know my new students in the Intensive English Program here at my alma mater, Kennesaw State University.

Lesson Plans
1. Students should be given a few minutes to review their words for the quiz.
2. Students will take the Vocab Level 4 Week 5 | Quizlet (Handout). They should take no more than 20 minutes to complete the quiz. Students who finish early can take a short break (no more than 5 minutes).
3. Students should be put into small groups of 2-3 students. They will review the Idioms Level 4 (Handout). Each group should choose 5-10 idioms that they will use to create a skit. In their groups, they must create a natural conversation using the idioms. They should write out the conversation and review it with the teacher to be sure they are using the idioms correctly and begin practicing their skits. They will present their skits in class next week.

Video Requirements
Create a short video: 2-5 minutes on a topic of your choice
- Choose any topic and write a short script for the topic using 20-40 Vocab Words
- Use vocabulary words to explain a topic of your choice
- For the best grade, add music, text and pictures to your video! Look at my examples of student work to create a great video that you can be proud of and share with others!
Topic Ideas:

- Current issues in your country or area of study

- social issues: poverty, racism, war, religious intolerance, pollution, corruption

- any problem in the world and the possible solutions

Vocabulary Class Requirements
- You must use at least 20 words from our list of vocabulary words
- You may use the words to write a script and then read the script, or you can use the words as text for the video.
